History
Founded in 1986 in a small garage in San Diego, TC Sounds was initially a one man operation with one single goal: To create the worlds best loudspeaker transducer. Since then, TC Sounds has become a world renown icon for high excursion subwoofer design. Started by CEO Thilo Stompler, TC Sounds has maintained outward and revolutionary thinking which has literally changed the way the home, car and professional audio markets hear bass.
In 1989, Thilo was designing a high fidelity full range speaker that was much smaller than what was done in the past. Because amplifier technology was changing, higher power small amplifiers allowed speakers and boxes to become smaller than before. Preceding the age of cheap power, loudspeakers literally had to be very large, very light (moving mass) and highly sensitive so they could produce adequate SPL with only a few dozen watts! As a consequence of these criteria, low frequency woofers did not have very high xmax (linear displacement), but rather were very efficient and large. Thilo was frustrated with his small full range speaker design because it lacked proper bass output and it was impossible for him to buy a high excursion small subwoofer that was able to produce adequate SPL. While larger 18" pro audio drivers indeed existed, no one since then thought that a smaller 12" subwoofer was capable of high excursion beyond even less than 1” peak to peak! Thilo took it upon himself to engineer and design the world’s first high excursion subwoofer that would work in a smaller box than ever before and that was truly able to move more than 1" peak to peak. Thilo did succeed, but what he did not predict was an overwhelming popularity that his new subwoofers created. Since then, the home, car and now the professional audio markets have vastly changed.
Today, it is virtually impossible to find a high quality subwoofer that does not have high displacement. TC Sounds, with its small elite group of passionate audio engineers, still leads the industry with ultra high excursion, high BL subwoofers that are able to move beyond 3" of linear displacement. TC Sounds continues to push the envelope to evolve and invent new ways to create sound that takes not only bass, but full range sound to an entire new level. TC Sounds' proprietary and OEM designs are prevalent in today’s ultra high end home, car and professional audio domains because TC Sounds does not settle for second best and neither should you.
